The profession called « Ecrivain Public » or Public Writer goes back many hundreds of years in France.

Correspondence in French has always been fairly formalized and people preferred to pay the EP to write on their behalf (and if necessary help them understand the reply). So the EP has always played a very useful social role as a link between the general French public (largely rural for many centuries) and their administrations.
The profession has survived by adapting to the new needs of the French population :

– looking for information on the web, contact by mail
– creating web content, speeches for businessmen, etc.
– phone call to settle administrative records
The work is mainly in French, and offers translations for foreigners.
